What Does Weather Sealing Actually Mean on a Camera?

The phrase weather sealed can make a camera sound almost waterproof. It is not. Weather resistance is one of the most misunderstood camera features.

Weather Sealing Is Not Waterproofing

A weather-resistant camera may have design features intended to reduce risk from light rain, dust or moisture. It does not mean the camera can safely be submerged or exposed to heavy rain indefinitely.

Why Does Weather Resistance Matter?

Outdoor photographers may encounter light rain, dust, humidity and other difficult conditions. Weather resistance can provide an additional level of protection when equipment is used appropriately.

The Lens Matters Too

A weather-resistant camera body does not automatically make the entire setup weather resistant. The lens and other connected components can also affect the protection of the complete system.

What About Camera Bags?

Even weather-resistant equipment benefits from sensible protection. If rain becomes heavy, move the camera somewhere dry rather than assuming sealing will protect it indefinitely.

Moisture Is Not Only Rain

Humidity and condensation can also create problems. Moving cold equipment quickly into a warm, humid environment can cause condensation. Allow equipment to acclimatize gradually when appropriate.

Does Weather Sealing Make a Used Camera Safer to Buy?

Not necessarily. Weather resistance is a feature, not proof that a particular used camera has never experienced moisture exposure. A used camera should still be evaluated individually.

Think of weather sealing as additional protection, not permission to ignore weather.
